Okay, sorry that last comment was probably totally unhelpful to you. About what videos to do next, I think it would be both cool and useful to do lessons on specific VERY IMPORTANT and FAMOUS passages (like really short sections, maybe no longer than several bars). You first go into how? to get the notes down, how to go for stability and consistency and then eventually move into the musical elements. It would be awesome to do various interpretations. Just my 50 cents. Btw, love the photos!

I typically went through a video once or twice and then studied. Thanks for the awesome music theory course Andrew! I've got 85/100. I've basically missunderstood the transposition of orchestral instruments. I thought that I needed to transpose them up, but now I understand it's the opposite way. As for the dim12th interval, isn't it supposed to be Db to Abb? I'm really confused about that one. Also, I suppose? that in the Db+ vii dim 7 chord that the top note can also be Bbb since it's -3rd up from Gb.

Con sordino is a term used for violins/cellos/viola/double basses. Not for? piano. It means to play your instrument with the mute (a small object that is placed on the other side of the bridge and it is fitted to all four strings). It? creates a muffled sound.

Some of your top students of music actually learned? all this stuff not for the purpose of then explaining it to others. Bach and Mozart spring to mind. Also, John Legend and Alicia Keys. I think you should have mentioned the upper mordent too and not just the lower one. In music? for melodic instruments it actually shows up a lot more (at least in my experience).

Lypur, I have a problem..I've always wanted to play the piano. I now wanted to relive that dream. But the thing is, I am affected with palmar hyperhidrosis since childhood, a condition that leaves me with excessive sweat from the soles of my palms/feet for no reason whatsoever. hi, thanks for the time you put into these videos like WOW! greatly appreciated! :) according to my confusing elementary rudiments book by barbara warram, to write an imperfect cadence, you put the subdominant and dominant notes of the key in the bass clef first, in different bars. then, you go to treble clef and write the triads? with the notes you wrote in the bass clef. then, i get confused as to what to do? i have an rcm theory exam on saturday! :(

@superjam18 Also, I wanted to add :) the name we use in different systems doesn't matter as? much as what the effect the cadence has and when we use it. :) I wouldn't worry so much about the name as what it does and how to use it :) I'm sure Beethoven didn't call them "imperfect cadences" but he sure used them a lot, in a great way. So bottom line is, don't focus on the name as much as what it does.

@lordlemmingman hmmm, that's completely different than what I've been taught. I do know there are different systems of naming cadences around the world. What you're describing with the tonic not not being on the top voiced? is a Perfect cadence, but it wouldn't be "authentic" or another term I learned was "Closed" Closed being with the tonic note on the bottom and top voices for the tonic chord, while open usually having the 3rd on the top, leaving the chord with an "open" sound.

I don't know if it's just a different way of saying? it but I have learned in my music theory class that a cadence ending on a V chord is a half cadence while an imperfect is applied to a authentic cadence, such as an imperfect authentic cadence which would be going from V or V7 to I but without the tonic being in the outer voices.

Im about to study Harmony, Counterpoint and Orchestration within a month thanks to you Andrew, you? have taught me all the basics. :D My Harmony teacher told me that the aug. 2nd is avoided because it is difficult to sing, and therefore forbidden in vocal music, Mozart used aug. 2nds a lot. im just getting into melody writing and it mentions that you can approach the leading tone in a minor from a 3rd below instead of rising the 6th. haha im actually learning theory b4 playing an instrument :D

@ferreirachase Actually, I only teach my private students. If I wanted to teach in the school system I would need to go through years of courses to get a piece of paper to prove I can teach music to? the kids. It's messed up, because according to the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) I've past my courses to be a music teacher, but according to the regular school system, I don't know anything. So I won't be teaching in regular schools. ^_^

Another awesome lesson. I hope you will be teaching harmony once you get done with level 3 and ofc when you feel ready. Btw what other parts of music theory is there to learn after rudiments level 3 except for harmony? I heard you mention history, counter point and analysis, is that all of the? stuff or are there other big topics too? Is there any specific order that's good when learning those things, like maybe harmony first then counter point or something like that?

Another great lesson. Thank you. Last week I was working on a piece of music and I came across this notation stuff. This is a great review. However, I was? puzzled when I tried to write a chord that leaves certain notes out. It was a G major without the D. What should be the notation in this case? What about inversions for suspended chords?

People joke that there are more people playing jazz than there are listening to it. @br1an419 your right that there is a F# in the D maj pentatonic , but at the time he said starting on any other note within the C maj pentatonic scale ( D ) it will still sound good (in other words a mode ) which just means start on a different note of the same scale which was C maj pentatonic . then he talked about the D maj to just drop the 4th and 7th degree's in the scale @Andrew i don't think? you made a mistake there . minor pentatonic would just be described as major pentatonic starting on the 6th degree (minor mode) 6-1-2-3-5 i believe? same scale alteration as major scale. C major pentatonic is same as A? minor pentatonic.

Just a small correction on "number of tones": it is usually implied that the number of tones in a scale is the number of different notes in it (not counting the repeated note in the end!). The whole tone scale is? said to have 6 tones, and the usual major and minor scales are heptatonic scales - which means "7 tones", not 8.

why? fuss around memorizing the specific intervals of the minor pentatnic when you can think of it as simply the last mode of the major pentatonic. Since you were in C and A is the 6th of C major.. could you just refer to the minor pentatoinc and a aeolin mode of the major pent? to keep it simple You could call it the myxolydain since it's the 5th of the pent but.... meh keep it releative to the major it make sit easier to reference it... is this contrary to what a music class would teach?

Sir,? it would be nice if we can go and examine a really simple piece and in a way get a review of how things have been applied there. Like a walk-through sort of thing. This would help by giving concreteness to the theories through seeing how they are applied. Also, I'm very interested in how instruments work in an orchestra. Thanks.

I'm on level 3 (lesson 39 I think) but repeated level? 1 & 2 now. I did this exam the 2nd time now and I got 92/100, the first time I got 90/100. I've failed on the error fixing part once again but at least I've got everything else right. Time to re-watch some level 3 videos now.

And besides I've learnt new things by doing this exam. I've learnt by my mistakes basically. Btw, at the? 3rd line of Add up to the beats in the rhythm part isn't the first note grouping supposed to be a triplet? It's 3 notes grouped together in 4/4 time but there's no 3 above or below it.
