@zacinnic incase anyone hasnt answered you yet, the reason its a Dm7 is because its the ii chord in a C major chord progression.? In any major chord progression the chords are made as follows: i=M7, ii=m7, iii=m7, IV=M7, V=dominent, vi=m7, vii=m7(b5).

@DJchrismiller1 You ca just play 1-5 in the LH or full chords too, if you want. The main point is that when the LH is just a C for many measures, you can jam on the little "ghost" changes? with the RH to make things interesting.

really like this vid. I am having a hard time figuring out what you are playing with the left hand however. Are you playing the 1&5? Or just on the C and all other notes just get the bass note? Thats for when you first? introduce the progression @ 2:19. Also later when Than @ 2:52 you are playing the full triads in the left and the same on top but just arpeggiating them with the right? Sorry so analyzed, i'm just at a different level and trying to break it down properly. TY.

In the new year I'm planning to assemble some more in-depth video explanations of what I'm doing -- there seems to be a fair amount of interest and? I realize that this video doesn't go into enough detail. With this one exercise alone, you can sight-read chord charts and play at a professional level very quickly. Within one year of learning this (at age 14), I was working in a band.

I'm not quite sure what you're looking for, but, yes, the first time around I'm playing the notes sequentially with the right hand (connected to the? 2-5-1 in the left hand). Then I play the chords in the 2-5-1 sequence. I'm going to have a friend write it out for me and then make it available for those who read music. Will be devoting more time to the piano in the new year.

Briefly, it's a two-nine, five-nine, one-nine exercise and the same sequence of notes is played in all twelve keys - start in the key of G - then to key of? C and then just continue in the circle of fourths pattern. I'm planning to do a more in-depth explanation -- I just wanted to get an overview done to have a demo available for my students.

@decus69 - actually, I'm making some more videos next month - one will explain what I'm doing here? in more detail. This is a CRITICAL exercise that must be mastered if you want to make any progress in playing jazz or playing any popular song. It's like the alphabet -- without mastering this exercise in all 12 keys (in major and minor mode), you won't be able to put things together. Just like to need the alphabet to put words together.

@bobgsearch - yes, first you play the individual notes (like I'm doing) -- follow that process through all 12 keys -- do them in the circle? of 4ths pattern -- start in G - then to C, F, B-flat, etc. Then once you have gone through all 12 keys, then go back to G and start over, only this time playing the chords. Use a metronome and play the chord sequence through all twelve keys. This pattern is very useful, once mastered. It's a starting point, and there are many variations.

@ChocolateChipPizza Major 6th and major 2nd are there too add a bit of jazzy colour it, but mainly just as passing notes between the home notes and the blue notes. A final thing to know is that, no matter what chord you're on, to a certain extent the "rules"? of the tonic key fit over EVERY chord. I.E in G, if you're on the C chord you can still just noodle with the G blues scale.

Minor third, flat 7 are kind of semi clashes that add a bit of a Bluesy sound.? Minor third resovles to major third and flat 7 resolves through the major 7 to the tonic (or as mentioned before sometimes isn't that much of a clash. flat 5 (or sharp 4) is yet more bluesy and held as a clash for as long as you like and can then follow in any direction really. Try clashing it with the minor 3rd fifth 7th and tonic, and using that as a stopping point for a held note or trill to catch your breath.

Think of what chord you're on at the time. Tonic, major third, and fifth are home. flat 7? isn't too clashing and is almost home too. To make it sound like boogie woogie- you add "clashes"

Agreed. The feel of the RD-700GX? is *far* superior to pretty much any other Digital PIano I tried (except V-Piano) for about 2-3 months. Coudln't be happier with it. BTW great performance. Thanks Davo Beno

@zamton You are MUCH better getting a? keyboard with "weighted keys". Why? Because when you learn to play on non-weighted keys and go to play a piano no sound will come out because your "touch" is too light. The difference is like learning on an electric typewriter then trying to type on a manual typewriter. The Yamaha has the BEST piano sound of any of the keyboards. The Yamaha Portable Grand NP-30 (semi-weighted) is cheapest and best.

@liamzuid It takes a lot of practice to separate your hands because it is like your mind is doing two different things at once! it is! Taking? piano lessons is the best way to overcome this problem..I like the Adult Course "Adult Piano Adventures" by Nancy and Randall Faber. It comes with a cd to play along.
