Not all people with Autism can play the piano, do math and are exempted from doing english. Some have? significant cognative issues that impact their learning, social and behavior. I would cure it in a heart beat if I could. This young man is wonderful not only because he has Autism but because he has a talent and a gift.

@absmith6 Amy, no offense meant by this, but understanding how autistic savants 'learn' isn't going to lead to a cure. It's less about learning and more about inherent knowledge of the structures involved. Your son has a complex, innate understanding of the structures behind this tonal music, have you ever tried having him listen to an atonal piece and seeing if he can replicate? His understanding of and ability with music with such skill is rule-dependant; similar? to 'calendric calculators'

@absmith6 Also playing piano will? have ease his symptoms of anxiety, it helps with hand eye coordination as well and will work areas of the brain that are under developed, and even though autism doesnt go away symptoms can get better with time and work. His playing may also be the result of something called synthesthesia, when senses are so over heightened that they clash, smells and tastes he can pick up better than others as well, another reason why some kids with autism are picky eaters

@absmith6 I have mild autism and I play piano by ear and draw realistic faces without lessons, its bc our brains pick up so much detail, thats why its hard for him to look? you in the eye bc all of the detail we take in of a persons face and voice, autism means his brain is completely different. He has abilities he might not have if he didnt have autism, as much as we want autism to get better, we dont wanna cure genius abilities it comes with. Continue to let him play and see what happens!

@absmith6 autism is a condition with many conditions along with it, poor hand eye coordination, anxiety disorder, over sensory issues,? so if we cure autism we have to start by curing anxiety and panic disorder, then find a way to cure poor hand eye coordination, gastrointestinal problems and so on, but as the video shows autism has gifts, his ear is so developed that he can hear a difference in the tones were others cannot, his brain has so much detail others dont pick up and has a memory!

@absmith6 well i am like your son and i am all most 50,i was not helped as now one knew when i was young i was just sent to this special school in the 70, at 9 to 16..my interests are psychology, i? have always been keen on it also music i sing tennor and i can add lib with 13 singers and it always works out and i dont read music.i dont know my times tables but i remember all the morse code i am a radio ham and i restore vintage radios with tubes in ...jeff..48 aspie..it to 40 min to learn morse

@gelfddelfg you obviously don't know anything about absolute pitch. It is not a talent or a trick but a very particular brain configuration. A person with this feature can recognize notes just like anyone can recognize colors without a? reference. I recomend you the book Musicophilia by Dr. Sacks. I really understand that your first impression is that it is a trick, but because of that I encourage you to inform yourself about this reality.

I have perfect pitch too. I just tried to test myself along with this video. I couldn't keep up with the boy. His skills are incredible. I didn't realize I could identify? pitches until I was about 14 years old, so he has a definite advantage. I'm amazed.

Besides the people who will be negative about it unless the kid works in the music industry or has a college degree in it, other people will exploit, be adverse about it, except for perhaps a few, who actually don't care but to do what they can theirselves playing a musical instrument, and it will be a burden that is used against him by most people because according to them, it scares them. Unless learning different ways to listen to music, the kid is forever saddled? with only hearing pitches of notes in any music. If you think that is any music enjoyment, I do not. And by the way, learning a different way to listen to music after knowing the notes, would be extremely more difficult and very hard to do.

Perfect pitch really is amazing. They say that you? can teach children perfect pitch by teaching them pitches at the same time you teach them color differentiation and this bewilders me. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, it really just shows how little music is considered to be a fundamental concept. If all we need to do is teach pitches, then we should do that with everyone. It's kind of sad that the most people ever achieve in their lives is relevant pitch.

I greatly appreciate this performance...I've tried applying meditation and balanced posture, but it somehow feels contrived to me. There are Horowitz and Rubinstein who went into very still and quiet places while playing, but did they try to do that, or did it come naturally to them? When I play like that it feels like I'm constricting myself somehow. Perhaps I haven't reached the level that Ms. Bruser has and for her this? posture and "stillness" isn't trying but natural.

She seems to be in an almost meditative state throughout and we all know that when we are most in touch with our musical being, this is where we are. you're playing it almost exactly like it is written on the paper, but sorry, there is almost nothing like emotion in this... (i just want to be honest) i have to admit, that it is quite hard to play mozart on an e-piano :D so when you excercise, try to change the volume sometimes, try to play it? dynamicly and variably

@slightlygrouchy I have to counterdict You. The so-called `style´ of a Bach fugue is not about citing themes of various Bach-pieces! It is more within the composition - within the counterpoint. I do not want to `hate´ Prof. Graysons efforts, but I think this could? also be named as `late-baroque-style´. To do as promised, on should take the Muppet-theme and make a STAB-score out of it - I am a purist and a musicologian, so please understand my remarks.

@11Kralle - Prof. Grayson? is of course citing, alluding and referencing. That is the whole point when you play something "in the style of a Bach fugue." That does not mean, however, that the piece is not improvised. The Muppet theme pops up throughout the entire fugue and the selection and assembly of all the components happened on the spot and was not preplanned. Grayson has impeccable improv credentials and your negativity is uncalled for.

This is not impovised - he is citing much phrases from various Bach-pieces. If Bach would have done an extemporation over that very muppet-theme (knowing the original and the changes of music aesthetics as well) he would have gone? through way more dominant-tonalities. So it is not `style of Bach´ - it is citing Bach.

I listened carefully your improvisations and there´s no flaw, look like you think ahead. Every single note from the beginning to the end is chosen. That´s good. @improvelectronic continuing... Mozart and his triads on arpeggios... I´m researching Scriabin´s style which is very interesting. He often use major chords like C#7#9add13 and then changes root to G ( tritone ), but for me improvising this way is unstable, some days when I am inspired, I do things I´ve never imagined, but some other days,? inspiration don´t come and it´s dangerous, could be a disaster trying to improvise Beethoven´s way. Do you have some special exercise on concentration ?

Of course, I studied a lot about the different styles for improvisations. Every composer has his own sound, and we took those for using on our mimics of the? style, for example, Liszt and Wagner, and all those modulations, and abuse of diminished chords. Chopin´s peculiar way of constructing chords...continues...

Still, it is important to try to give a sense of harmonic direction, motivic unity, and formal structure as well as to? stay close to the intended style. There is no way to learn it in advance since I never know what themes or styles will be suggested.

I don´t really believe Mr Grayson is improvising the whole thing. Looks very planned and structured. I do my own improvisations on public on themes offered by the audience, indeed, I didn´t know Mr. Grayson till yesterday, but the problem with improvising is? that not always sound good, depends on inspiration. I´d like to know his method, how he plan structure in order to not sound boring or go to wrong ways. I will upload some improvisations to youtube later. Mr. grayson is very talented.
