My goal has always been to be able to play "Clair de Lune" before it became famous with Twilight and all. I also wanted to play mozart symphony 9 I believe. I forgot which one, but? that one was my dream ever since I was little. Beautiful music coming out of those hands! The flow is just perfect.

@eclipse561 Rachmaninov is great without doubt... But there is always a tendency to criticise something Russian since the people who used to set standards were Germans.. Russian culture has? a lot of fantasy and magic which is easy to criticise.. And Rach did not approximate his music to the trend of his times.. He was a romantic in the time of moderns like Stravinsky and Schoenberg..

wow this is brilliant the style is so unique to what im used to hearing from rachmaninoff and well also from any composer before him. its incredible because this composition alone seems to have sparked the idea for big band music, jazz and even movie themes from the 50's and 60's.?

From? what I understand, some people think early Rachmaninoff is great, but his music became more controversial as he got older and made more. Can someone with a more educated opinion than I have explain this to me? I think this is pretty good, especially six minutes in.

@44032 Keep in mind that as this is Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini. Like Rachmaninoff, he rarely repeats the same melody twice, and beings spinning off wild variations upon variations almost as soon as the piece starts,? and really only uses Paganini's theme as a starting point, and at times a hopping point between which are countless phrases of his own. Of course this a poor vessel for only Paganini's theme, Rachmaninoff wouldn't fit in the boat, lol.

@iluvspockandsylar418 umm NYSSMA stands for New York State School Music Association and yah Suzuki 4. I think i might play that song again one of these days. and NYSSMA is pretty much a test that happens once a year. It's kinda like Royals but only goes from lvls 1-6 with no theory and for all instruments as long as there's a? piece you have prepared from the manual...it's pretty much a way for students to scored by judges to see how well they play...

my piano teacher (LRAM) said at the royal academy, in sight reading test, they had to look at? a piece of unfamiliar music, THEN (without the music) play as much of it as possible from memory on the keyboard! the teacher here is just touching on that aspect when the clip ends... sort of a pre-playing visual reconnaissance flight over unfamiliar territory. thanks for uploading!

I believe that a combination of relative? and absolute note identification is best. In some circumstances, you'll need to identify isolated notes without references of possible intervals, but in many cases, passages have specific intervalic patterns. It's more important to understand notes as degrees of a scale, then the different chords and how they're commonly broken down. Your brain will put everything together, but only if you have the nessecary knowledge.

I gave to play this piece for a concert at my school. You did it great, but REMEMBER THE DYNAMICS!!! Slow-fast, soft-loud etc. My music teacher told me to double the piece, in other word play it 2 times, but the? 2nd time i play it sould have more counts and changes etc. Pretty cool!

@cristinasplace I would play it at your own speed, slow and accurate is way better? than fast and sloppy. The description at the top of the song (in Alfred Book) read 'Moderately slow', and since it is a blues it should not be played fast. I would trust your own judgment.

@hedwig85 Edition to my last note. i just saw the footnote (at bottom of music) suggesting to play eighth notes the way you did synchopated. That is an advanced jazz concept. I am very surprised? the authors introduce it at this stage. A beginning student is still learning to play with standard timing. You have already learned beyond this stage (now at level four, I see. Nice job!! ) . I am making this suggestion to beginners.

@PianoNoobAlexMan Great job on fluency !! For dynamics, it's? written on the music. it begins at forte (loud), then on 2nd line there is descrescendo (gradual decrease) to piano (soft). It stays piano until middle of 3rd line, when there is a crescendo to forte. It then stays at forte thru end. You retard nicely to the fermata (hold). I suggest playing the eighth notes with equal length, not syncopated dotted eighth to eighths. At this stage of learning, it is better to play notes as written :)

I'm sorry but I find this absurd. His isn't a piece that is practical? to learn by sight, trying to explain what's going on (as has been requested) is also just not practical. If you want to learn this you have to have the written sheet music. You need to be able to sight read to an extent. It's too complex to pick up from few "tutorial" vids. It's like reading a book...if you read slow you don't engage as much. Speed readers actually have better memory retention of the content ...
