Good job, helpful video! Just started looking into using modes. I can build them by transposing from their all white key versions, I've been slow to use them as I was stuck thinking how it would be easier to "construct" them on the fly. ie Two methods mentioned, as a major scale of some other tone or? remembering the alterations to the major scale of the root. You convinced me to use method #2. I loved it when you make it seem like you just play any old note in the mode and it sounds good.
By: debbieporyes. on 18 Aug 11, 17:23:49
I am glad this helped! And, modes are fine when you have a tune with 4 measures or more on the same chord (Maiden Voyage, or Flamenco Sketches). Even then, they are limited. For bebop, or tunes where the chords change every two or four beats, you have to think about the chord tones, neighbors, passing tones etc. Charlie Parker probably couldn't even spell "dorian." And our music is chromatic, uses all 12 pitches.I am available now for Skype lessons. Feel free to go my website? for contact info.

I absolutley loved this! It made so much more sense then alot of other ways I've been taught! I was taught that if you start the scale on a different root using a different pattern specified to the mode then it was what it was?? Or maybe ther's some truth to that and I've been picking it up wrong this whole time? Anyways! I just tried this and I can completely hear all the modes take their "colour" for the first time! Please post more on maybe changing chords and keeping with the changes?? :)

@mechwarreir2 I just don't agree with you about the modes. Your way of explaining it is misguided and confuses most people. To understand? jazz harmony you have to be able to think and hear up from the root of the chord. A good example can be found by listening to Flamenco Sketches (Miles). When chords are moving more quickly within a key center, as in a standard, it's helpful to recognize the scales in their function, and then your approach has a some limited value.

Nice playing, but this video doesn't really explain what the modes actually are. A beginner would be very confused. C dorian is the same as B flat major scale (or B flat ionian), C phrygian is the same thing? as the A flat major scale. There are 7 different modes, and the reason why they sound different is because you put more emphasis on a different note. For example, in C ionian you put more emphasis on C and also progress to C.

Hi xazngirlx, your? question would require a longer answer than I can give here. The purpose of this particular video is just to show how you can improvise using a particular set of pitches or certain scale or mode with a sort of drone on the bottom. If you keep changing the bass note, then it doesn't sound as much like that scale, but you can certainly just follow your ear and try to find sounds you like! There's really no right or wrong. have patience with yourself.Maybe find a teacher?

i dont understand, what makes the piece phrygian? do you constantly have to be returning to the base note?? >< this is so confusing , im trying to compose based? on phrygian ):
