Nice. I don't think there's anything wrong with your timing.? And I like the lightness of your tone, the effortlessness with which you hit the occassional high note. I would take more risks/liberties with the melody line. Also, try to vary your comping of the chords and base line more to create interest.

@danieljones013 use chords mostly in root position, at least at first.. obviously, there's no bass player , so you have identify the root of the chord yourself. learn some stride and ragtime techniques. then you can bounce from the tonic note to 1st and 3rd inversion chords for a more modern sound.you can also? walk the bass, and stab at the chords between your soloing, and arpeggiate the chords.

@gospelkeys07 I agree however, being a jazz musician myself soloing over ii-v's is too easy. The latter half of this song is all ii-V's. The beginning as you have mentioned has D7- gmaj - Bb7- Ebmaj which are ii-V's. I only have trouble with the first two? chords. soloing over the song is quite easy. But, the Bmaj to G kills all the sharps but the F#. And becuase that chord goes by so fast... I see your point but the harmony is no prob. Just that one key change from B to G

The rest of the song is easy becuase of the ii-Vs but the B and the g only share the two aforemencioned tones, making the scalar jump interesting...lol to say the least. When you solo over this tune do you use? bass notes in the left hand or chords? I noticed different pianists use different self-comping stills. Mccoy tyner used lot of bass notes, even chick corea. How do you combin bass note and chord comping when solo?

Just play the appropriate major scale (or some mode of it) over the appropriate chords. The song only requires 3 major scales, it just moves between them very fast. So, over the Bmaj7 you'd play a B maj scale (or a mode of it), over the D7 and the Gmaj7 play a G maj scale, over the Bb7 and the Ebmaj7 play an? Eb maj scale, and so on. It takes time. Just start really slow and work your way up.

Actually, a tritone is an interval of 6 half steps; shell voicings are R3 and R7 which can be 3 or 4 half steps for 3rds, and 10 or 11 half steps for 7ths (with an occasional? dim7 at 9 half steps). You are probably thinking about the distance between the 3rd and 7th of a dominant 7th chord, indeed an interval of a tritone.

Sifu, are these not also called Bud Powell voicings because of the R3 and R7/b7 tones? Unlike tri-tones, these shells have a Root (R) and third? (3rd) or seventh (7th), but is it adviseable to have back to back shells of the same quality and/or color tone? Are they not supposed to be alternated? Thanks for your time!

SWEET!!! I just tried this and mastered it in 5 mins! thanks. I used to be weary of the "forbidden keys" [B, E and A and D] but after this I get why most polished musicians play in these keys. It sounds much better? and offers more wiggle room to transition into other keys. Thanks for the posting

@PianoShorty - no it doesn't really work like that. It's hard to explain. Have you ever played the game on the nintendo DS where it shows you a word like 'red' but the colour of the text is blue? You have to shout out the word but your brain is fighting you because the colour is different. It's weird and confusing. Imagine that but having? to do it 6 colours at once and in rapid succession. That's kind of what it's like. Doable, but difficult.

if you learned to use your fingers properly you would play a? whole lot better.... start using your pinky alot more.... octaves should be played thumb and pinky, freeing up the other fingers to play notes in between....
