@jazztutorial I'm playing guitar so I'm usually doing a maximum of 5 voices at a time, but usually 4. I use A D G C as a rootless Cmaj voicing and sometimes as a rootless? G7 or even? D-7 voicing. I agree, I'd say my favorite Cmaj7 voicing is C B E A D

@rillloudmother You can voice a 4th chord however sounds good to your ear. I like building off the 3rd or 7th because I can get the maximum number of 4ths - C major 7 = B E A D G C. Building off the 6th you can only do A D G C, as F sounds odd. Also it's good to? voice the 3rd and 7th low down in the voicing, where they carry more wight, because those 2 notes tell you the character of the chord - major, minor, dominant. All the extension notes - 9 11 13 - sound good higher up just to ad color

I learned 4th chords a while ago as chords to use for parallel movements, but I realize that? when I use 4th voicings as static chords they do build from the 3rd or the 7th. I also build from the 6th over ii-7, V7 and Imaj7 chords, 4th chords built from the 6th are kind of ambiguous though.

@pcsuper1 not at all, ask away. I should have said 'dissonance' instead of 'tension'. For most peoples' ears, playing a flat 6 over a minor chord sounds slightly dissonant, and many players 'avoid' the flat 6 while they're soloing - it's just a half tone up from the 5th which is why it clashes slightly. It's up to you, what sounds best to your ear? minor 6 or major 6? You can use either one depending on the situation and what sounds best to? you.

@pcsuper1 Although Ab is in the key signature of C minor, jazz musicians tend to play in the Dorian mode when they see a minor chord. The Dorian mode is a minor scale with a natural 6th, and it actually has less? tension (dissonance) than the natural minor scale. The Ab in the natural minor scale is dissonant, and seen as an "avoid note" when soloing. C dorian = C D Eb F G A Bb The dorian mode is also a brighter scale, and less dark/sinister because of the A natural

4/17/2011...I like the way you pateintly teach Sir! I cant read music and am currently trying to learn to play by ear. My goal..to follow my voice as I sing so I can record a self produced Latin Salsa Album and Disc #2 will be an Urban r&b cd. How can I memorize chords faster? and..how do I know which cord is the right? one to follow my voice on that given vocal note??? @FightorDieBand So basically there is a formula for this. The chords of the major scale are: I, ii, iii, IV, V, vi, vii°. (Major 1, Minor 2, Minor 3, Major 4, Major 5 (dominant), Minor 6, Diminished 7.) So the chords in the key of C according to this formula would be: C major, D minor, E minor, F major, G major, A? minor, B diminished. So if someone says play a 2 chord in C major, they mean for you to play a D minor chord, and so forth. This usually how roman numerals are used.

@FightorDieBand Hello Fightor. You asked how the chord progression is written in roman numerals since those chords don't belong to the C scale. In this case you wouldn't use Roman numerals. You really only? use roman numerals when you hear someone say "play me a 1 chord in the key of G Major", or "play a 4 chord in the key of A Major". What they mean by this is to play the chords according to the key that you are in
