Hi? I always wanted to learn blues piano ever since I saw my brother in law playing. I've studied music technology and learnt some theory at college but it's nothing like this. I could never afford a teacher so it wouldn't be possible for me to have learnt what I have without these videos and I've learnt to play things I never thought possible for me, I especially love improvising in D minor lol Thanks so much :)

Speaking of passing chords, care to make a video on When moving up in a? scale in the bass, while on the same chord, you can alternate between the chord, a diminished chord, and the original chord again? I think that would be a good follow up.

I always love your videos, you have some great stuff. However, this video seems pretty advanced and makes huge jumps upwards from most of your videos. You re-harmonized very well, and it sounds great, but when you mention your 1 chord and say that its a G, it looks like some G9 or G11 chord and the same with the rest of the? chords you use, they are not "basic 12 bar blues chords". I'm not saying this isn't cool stuff to learn, it really is, its just not as simple as you might think. Thank you

Very good, but you need to work on playing your arpeggios more evenly (the ones in the beginning.) Also when you're playing octaves on white and black? keys I suggest using your 4th finger on black keys and 5th on white keys. Much easier that way.

@jamesmykal Yes, that's right - a Major 9th chord would be a Major 7th chord plus a 9th? - 1,3,5,7,9. You could use this chord on the tonic (I) or the subdominant (IV), and on the dominant you can of course have a dominant 7th or 9th. Hope this helps

Well pointed out. I thought exactly the same when I came? to edit it, but I really didn't want to record it again. I did miss out those chords as this video was mostly about the way the just 9th note can be manipulated to give the chord a completely different sound. Thanks for the comment.

Csus2 and? CAdd2 aren't the same. A sus2 chord is triad where the 3rd is 'suspended' and replaced by a major 2nd whereas an Add2 is a triad with a major 2nd added, still containing the third. Good 9th chords you missed are the Major 9th, Minor 9th and 6/9 chords

I think one of the big issues these days is that so many people learn on digital pianos. Now, I *love* my Yamaha, but when I was a wee ickle kiddie? the very first Clavinovas were only just coming out, and cost a fortune. As such, I learned - and did my first eight years of practice - on an old piano with a really heavy action. Result: strong wrists and fingers, and no problems playing most blues and boogie, however fast.

Great concept that is easy to remember since you can basically just play the 2 and six in the left hand and then improvise using the jazz blues scale and that would? be simple to remember in any key. Yeah, that's a good way of thinking of it. I suppose it depends on whether you're used to? improvising on modes or not. If people are used to the blues scale, they'd probably find it easier to think of it as a Blues Scale with an added 2nd and 6th. That's how I prefer to think of it anyway. Thanks for the comment.

There's always a bit of freedom in how you voice the chords but the really important notes of any extended chord are the third and seventh. As pobz100 said, you can get away with omitting the 5th (because it doesn't add much? information about the chord), but a C9 should always include the minor 7th (Bb). Cadd9 and C9 aren't the same.

(also re pobz100 ) A sus2 chord wouldn't include the third. CSus2 is simply CDG. The idea is the 2 resolves to a 3 in the next chord. But CDEG,? CEGD, or CGED or whatever is Cadd9. Sometimes the first one is called Cadd2, but it really doesn't matter, its the same thing really.

Can you imagine always trying to play a 13th chord with all the extensions in order? Fact is in the high parts of the keyboard you can cluster stuff together and it sounds fine.

No, that's not a C9 chord. The 9th should be proceeded by the Dominant 7th, Bb in the chord of C. Your example is a Sus2 chord as there's no 7th. C9 would be C-E-G-Bb-D - THAT'S a C9 chord. ? Now, often the 5th maybe omited, therefore a you could have C in the bass, them E-Bb-D in the RH. That would make a common voicing. This guy keeps making errors in his videos about chord structres among others music theories.

Yeah you could do that. ? You can arrange them however you want...mostly. I wouldn't cluster too many notes together in the lower part of the keyboard cause it gets too muddy. General rule, the lower it is the more consonant the intervals should be (IE 5ths and octaves only below a certain point) Use your ear. Also usually the bottom note is the root or the third. Sometimes the 5th...or even sometimes the 7th. Never the 9th though unless its a passing tone in a walking bassline.

you are very? talented pianist but let me do one corection for you as I am experienced professional pianist. You should not play f min chord and f sharp together as it sounds bad. Hey,
Here is another cool, simple riff and I show you how to use it the 12 bar blues. I also quickly demonstrate the riff in other keys.
The riff consists of only really the first 4 notes of the blues scale of any key so its a fairly simple riff, but once you get the hang of it you can really do quite a lot.

I'm sure he hasn't the time? to make a video for complete beginners. The riffs he's playing aren't beginner riffs, therefore it's unnecessary for him to bother. Very useful! Especially that you show the riff in a "real world" context, I mean embedded in a longer piece. Maybe some left-hand techniques would help as well. We need more tutorials, just go on, with lots of comments! Btw, r u satisfied with Korg? SP250? I own a Roland HP101e now but want to change it for a more portable digital piano, like this one.

Blues and Jazz are two different styles. It's not only the tempo, but the scales, the rythms, the progressions and a lot of other stuff is totally different. I've been playing blues for several years now and a friend of mine is a? professional jazz pianist, and honestly, I don't get what he does. And the same happens the other way around. Jazz is a little bit more complex than blues (it uses more chords, for instance).
