@Thouchins People use all kinds. I would start somewhere in the middle and then see how? that suits you. .10's are pretty average and then .09's and .11's are somewhat less common. I use .10, .13, and .17 for E B and G strings and they feel good for me. David Gilmour uses .10, .12, and .16 and Joe Bonamassa uses the top 6 strings from an .11 gauge 7 string set. I'd start with .10's and see how they feel.

@FlyingBadman There are all sorts of models called Stratocaster. It's possible you're confusing/mixing the Japanese made Strats with the Chinese/Indonesian Squires. But basically there are Chinese/Indonesian Squires (not actually called Stratocasters btw), there's Mexican, Japanese & USA models (both SSS & HSS). The Japanese versions have some rarity to them and can be pricey, just like the USA ones.? There are also all sorts of trim levels, particularly within the USA made models...

i think you lessons are awesome. I do think though, in order for guitarist to go to the next level they need to understand timing. Not just patterns or feel. But how the notes fit in the measures. i wish more lessons? would include this. In a 16th note notation of the timing. If one is to strum in a constant 16th note rhythm they could nail the correct timing to any song. So, placing not patterns but the actual timing of the rhythm makes so much more sense.

@irgendwas4 In bluegrass, a lot of instruments are stacked. So you will have like 5 guitars, 3 violins (or fiddles, if you prefer that term), a couple of mandolins, at least 2 basses (accoustic contrabasses, normally--occasionally, double basses), multiple banjos, etc. Also, there are normally 2 or 3 people singing in bluegrass. So, while it seems to have a lot of instruments, they are all just stacked so that there are only 4? or 5 timbres present in the song.

@sumay02 there are many different approaches to playing modes, and for me, the simplest way to think of it is by starting with a major or minor scale and raising or lowering specific notes. for example: major based modes (all starting with major scale): ionian: good old major scale mixolydian:? lowered 7th lydian: raised 4th minor based modes (all starting with minor scale) aeolian: regular minor dorian: raised 6th phrygian: lowered 2nd locrian: lowered 2nd and lowered 5th hope that helps

Rob, I am confused...? I had to go do a bit of research on modes. Why is it some teach, for example, the C Major scale modes, using the same notes but with a different root Dorian as D,E,F,G,A,B,C,D.... Phrygian as E,F,G,A,B,C,D,E ..... etc...?? This changes the shape/Intervals, but the notes stay the same. Are there 2 different ways to approach playing modes or am I looking at this all wrong?

A little tip for anyone with small hands having a hard time stretching their fingers? to play these chords is to put a capo on a few frets up. Play the same chord shapes and because the frets are closer together you don't have to reach as far.
