Thanks for your kind words. I do teach in Princeton NJ, of course, but not so many people live near there. I also have tried teaching using Skype, with mixed results - really depends a lot on the location of the student, the quality and speed of their connection, and even apparently the time of day. So sometimes it works out reasonably well and sometime just a big problem. ? Maybe, soon, the technology will get better.

For the Presti? technique, you let your hand just hang relaxed. That generally will get all your fingers dangling so that, when the fingers are curved in a good playing position, the finger tips are all more or less lined up above one string - perfect for tremolo. If you play arpeggios then you can reach out with the a finger and curve the i a little more, and you could even play some arpeggios with different fingers - a 5 note arp. low note to top note = pimai, for instance, if you want to.

I'm confused. I should adjust my fingers so that the index hangs longest before touching the strings? I know it's a stupid question but guitar videos never seem to have enough angles. I keep re-watching the series and I'm still missing how exactly to hold my hand. I would think it would work with any finger style player. My main reservation would be that it will wear out your fingernails (assuming you use fingernails), but probably that will happen no matter what position you use. Try it - I'd imagine it would work. I've certainly seen? a number of steel string and electric players in bands, sitting and using a classical position to play.

Glad you are now getting a better sound. Do make sure to relax your hand as much as you can - that will help a lot. I believe there were some differences between what Segovia and Presti did, but a lot of similarities also. Just looking at pictures, I have hte 9impression that Presti's right hand position was more like what Llobet and Tarrega did, but without really seeing them play (impossible) it's not easy to be certain of? that.

After your extremely valuable videos I keep my attention on to the subjects you are pointing ,and from observing in YT videos ,I think Segovia and Presti used similar right hand technique. The entire carpal area remains straight ,flat,and the hanging fingers forming short hooks . When I tried ,I notice it restricts my flexibility,but it gives out a much better sound! It makes sense as the fingers now? are shorter(stronger)and energy is more focused.Great sound now comes out of my cheap guitar:)

Elsewhere in the world the assumption is you WORK really really hard to do whatever it is. Alice spent one hour with me late one afternoon in May 2005 and I left knowing what a mountain I had to climb. I was in love with the sound, and still am. I do not know even yet whether I have the desire (for that is what it is) to plunge into and past the elementary exercises. But even from what she showed me, I cannot go back to noodling unless I'm ready to go to serious work. Alice, thank you--you did what you were supposed to. Here is a song that I? use both Alternate picking and Economy picking. With and Without Speed picking. No matter what Im doing, I maintain the same basic position. FIrst part of the song Im using a mix of Alt and Econ. Second time through I add tremelo picking and still use Alt and Econ. In fact if you had to use your whole arm for Economy picking, it wouldnt deserve the name "Economy". Its goal is to minimize effort..not to increase it. And even when guys move the arm, if you know what your doing its minimal motion. Like Frank. He slightly moves? his arm because he picks up and down, verticly. I have removed that motion, by picking with the natural arch caused by the motion of the wrist. So I move from closer to the bridge slightly diagnoly back towards the trem

Thats one key to being a toptier player. You must consitantly use the same basic mechanics for all your playing. You use the exact same wrist motion for Economy, Alternate, and Sweeping. Or at least when you know what your doing this is the case. I have seen both Alt and Econ pickers who move the whole arm. That is their choise and if it works for them. Good for them. But I use the natural motion of the wrist? to fascilitate all my picking and to minimze motion

I also think Economy picking and Alternate picking lead to the same level of speed.Ive used both since the mid 80s and cant play faster using one over the other. Though I do think they give a slightly differant sound, if that makes sense. To? me its noticable when you incorporate a small sweep in one direction versus picking each note. And I completly disagree with saying you use your whole arm with Economy picking. Thats simply not true if you practise correctly. Wrist motion must be consistant

And I learned to incorporate shred technique into a context focused on groove. I include both alternate and economy picking in my playing, & had to learn how to apply both with groove. When we internalise all picking techniques, we can flow from one to the other seamlessly. We dont freeze our playing with adhereing to a 'formula' like the Alternate or Economy, turning our playing into something robotic. Context dictates. How we choose to set up the fingering of a passage, also dictates greatly what picking method makes sence for that particular passage. I might? play one passage with straight alternate, but in the very next passage use economy. One is not superior to the other.

We dont need to always adhere to the economy nor alternate forumula. These things are mutatable, dependent upon the context.? Why attempt to freeze these techs and make them lifeless? In one song I may use Alternating strokes in one passage, and in the very next, due to finger set up economy makes more sence.

More Youtube insantiy is afoot. Both economy and alternate picking are valid techniques, as is sweep picking, finger tapping, 8 finger tapping, virbrato,legato ect. Anyone who wants to be a top tier player, should have a solid grasp on all available techniques. The speed you achieve? with economy picking may be matched by alternate picking with sufficient practice. If you look at it on a certain way, alternate picking saves you a lot of motion when compared to economy (in alternate you move the wrist, in economy you move your whole arm).

@Hollywoodgirl1010 DADGAD is just an alternate form of tuning. The A, D, G (3rd, 4th, 5th) strings remain the same like in standard EADGBE. Only 1st (E), 2nd(B) and 6th(E) strings need to be re-tuned? to D, A and D respectively. Then, once u get DADGAD, u tune every string a half-step down to C# G# C# F# G# C#. Hope this helps. :)

Making it very uncomfortable if and when you are standing onstage, therefore making your playing not as good as it should be. --So, practice standing up! Just wanted to give thanks about pointing out the other way of measuring neck relief. ? I just can't tell by the naked eye - but I sure can see how the string sits on the 12th with 1st and last fret down. :) Just did my first truss rod adjustment after watching, and blammo - that irritating buzz is a goner.

Hey i have a question, i recently switched from? medium .46 strings to heavy bottom slinky top .56 , the nut seems to be alright but now whenever i play on the lower frets i get horrid buzz, even with my bridge action extremely high. enough to the point where its like a quarter of an inch or more above the fret board, to where i CANT play and STILL get buzz, help? :/

Thanks a lot for this video! I? just got a new acoustic Epiphone DR 90 guitar that comes with an adjustable trussrod and had no idea what that meant. You explained it perfectly. I couldn't have explained something as complicated about a guitar as this without confusing the crap out of everyone. So great job. I don't think my guitar needs this adjustment right now but when it does I'll know what to do now.

@stophocles Actually, it is specific like that- the? picking that is- I learned it absolutely note for note. Its a specific pattern and melody, All depends if you really want to play it correctly or not!
