Good Video Thanks! Carter Beuford (Dave Mathews Band) has a great instructional dvd out, where he is a huge proponent of 'left hand lead/right hand snare' playing. I haven't gotten to the point of picking it up well enough, but that might be something you try. Rather than playing 'left' he has his kit set up standard,? but plays his hi-hat with the left and and snare on the right and starts his single stroke rolls with his left hand.

@daveclarkdrums That's true, and you're right there, everything had to be re-learned, which took? several years. However, it was the best thing I ever did, and if anyone has the patience, make the switch - you won't regret it. Dom Famularo was R-handed for years and now he's an advocate and inspired me. I started cross-handed and was angry that I was taught that way when I felt the benefit. All I can say is if you're starting on drums, start open-hand and you won't have the regrets we all do now.

These are indeed essential ideas, Dave, but are you familiar with Open Hand playing? 21st century drumming will really consist of it, where the L hand plays the hi-hat with the R on the snare, and the right hand plays the ride with the L hand on the snare. Your hands *should not cross*. Hopefully? cross-handed playing will be forgotten in a few decades, for as long as one plays cross-handed, you'll always have a weak hand. Open-hand is like having 2 R hands, and a weak hand is left in the past.

@MrBaniboy Matched grip move cymbal further away....Practice it. I'll be doing subdivisions (rush) unacompanied on a video soon, and I had to? move my left cymbal further away to play the finale chorus which involves an extremely difficult snare/crash/snare/crash with the left hand at high speed... Once I moved the cymbal further away it was much easier to hit the accents.

Thanks mate :-) Like you say, you have to be able to move comfortably around the kit in triplets. You're dealing with 4 sets of three notes, 12 notes althogether. Make up your own exercises by moving them around the snare and toms in as many combinations as you can come up with, play quarter notes with? your left or right foot along with that. Or with a metronome. That will keep you busy for a while, have fun and good luck Ydna

this is a great tutorial man, keep up the good work! i just have a question about the drum fills. i'm assuming they're also in triplets, but whenever i try to do a fill with triplets i just end up with straight 16th? or 32nd note fills. are there any basic triplet fills that will help with my coordination? i guess the hardest part for me is moving comfortably around the kit in triplets.

I like how in the obviously rehearsed "drum lesson" Neil just makes him start out with something simple and work out something from there by feeling how the groove goes. A good drummer? doesn't play what's written, he can add as much as he wants.

@hibeeOz Yes I have they do what they do well if that's your thing. Having said that I don't think he's all that important when it comes to the art of drumming. I think he's one dimensional and in all honesty quite boring. If you dig him I have no? problem with that. I know he has his fans. I'm not one of them. Come to I think of it I don't know of any artist or musicians I admire that would ever hire him for anything. And that really says it all. And I like all kinds of music.

Awesome lesson!!! but in my opinion the easiest way to get this rhythm under your skin, is to read the notes and slowly play them in the tempo where is? grooves and be patient! Eventually the groove starts to "groove" and you are there ;)

@qreste1 The groove uses groups of 3 (3-3-3-4) so the triplet analogy works when breaking it down. He makes it clear the the pattern is in 16ths and explains in a way that is easy to digest. Just put a metronome? on with the 16th subdivision playing and I can't see how you can go wrong. Great video dimsunk!

@qreste1 In the intro of the video, I play the groove. Does it sound like a shuffle? I'm not playing it in triplets. It's in 16th notes. The explaining of the triplets is a first step to help working out the ghost notes and accents in the hands. The next step is moving it over to 16th notes. Like a kid riding a bike for the first time starts with training wheels then removes them eventually. You ask me to remove the? video , but it helped alot of people. check the comments. @dimsunk You tell us to count as 'one and a.. two and a..'. It sounds more like Toto - Rosanna this way. Listen to Rosanna and to this song and hear the difference. You should never count like this, then you'll never get it as tight as Garibaldi plays it. And it's not a triplet. A triplet is what you play in shuffles, which this is not. A swiss triplet is a triplet with a flam stroke, which has nothing to do with this either, Listen to? yourself play at 7:29 and hear the triplets.

This video is not a good drum lesson. It only teaches you not to try and learn from YouTube videos. The beat does _not_ consist of triplets. Please watch David Garibaldi's videos and see the groove is composed of 16th notes in a regular feel. NOT a shuffle feel! So, as? apposed to what this person is 'teaching' and playing, this groove does not contain triplets and is NOT shuffle, at all. Do not even try to count as triplets.This is very important to understand. Please remove this video.

There are not many people who can teach very well, but you do. you take it step by step, break it down and repeat a lot for people to really 'get it'. Well done and a great groove. The only thing? Hey Phil...You showed this to me in the mid/late 90's. I love it and use it all the time, including the 5 stroke used both single and double stoke technique. Nice lesson, you can also play the six as straight sixteenth notes (1 e and ah two e) then back to triplets (trip pul let trip pul let) Just a? variation... Your lessons and presentation are extremely well done. Lots of people can play, it is a different skill to do video and speak well and have great drum sound.
