Bad Lesson. This guy is not a djembe player, he is a conga player. He plays slaps like on a conga, hand drums? are not all the same. If you just want to learn random stuff and don't care about the tradition on djembe, then there is something for you in this video. If you want to learn djembe find a teacher who's studied the tradition.

There's actually two sorts of? globalization. It's what the word used to mean, and what it is now twisted into, that being cheap labor and exploitation. What it ment back in the day was free flow of the workforce and products all over the world. Now it's just sending a measly amount of dollars to a third world country so that slave drivers can force kids to make sneakers.. And as flight of the conchords said "the sneakers aren't getting that much cheaper". (from their song Think About It)

With all due respect, I do not believe you should be attempting to teach rhythms from Guinea and Mali at this point. My advice is to find a good teacher, work hard on technique (bass, tone and slap *for djembe*); learn basics of dunduns, really *absorb* all the parts of several rhythms - and get a set of dunduns + a decent djembe. You really are not yet at the point of being able? to teach West African rhythms in a way that's true to the music. But you *can* get there.

Wouldn't it be lovely to play dunun parts on dununs instead of non-dununs? And the djembe parts on actual djembes? If you are going through the trouble of putting a video together and if you really love? this music, why not take the small, yet significant, step of getting real instruments and not machine made instruments that do not contribute back to the origins of this music - West Africa, where they are very, very poor and need the business.

west african music is an immersion in culture and the the antithisis of globalisation. Thus support west african traditional instrument makers as much as possible. Learn to appreciate the difference between? a Malian drum and drum from Guinea 1 language 1 world 1 music, well perhaps, but personally i still run on 'variety' being the spice of life. Baraka!!!

we do see? globalization and we dont like all of it. Just imagine everybody eating kfc!!! Dan, if its just about the music why bother with the shirt and the background (cultral indicators) to make it interesting. Those who study west african music are in general very culturally specific, including west african born teachers. As Mamady Keita suggests, a teacher should provide 3 pieces of information. 1, the name of the rhythm, 2, the ethnic group who plays it, and 3, for what occasion.

Dear Drumrhythms, despite the comments, I personally? would like to thank you for breaking down the rhythms. Its fantastic! People speak of rhythms, solo blah blah blah.. but you're breaking down the sections to allow newbies to understand how its done! KUDOS for that! Keep up the great work, and about that shirt thing, people dont see that globalization is at hand, like someone said, 1 language, 1 culture! MUSIC!

Thats? awesome!
By: drumrhythms. on 31 Oct 08, 15:11:11
im dan playing the video.this is not a discussion about race or culture, this is music. the clothes and background was meant to make it more interesting, not to break the clothing prohibition? and music law. Free your spirit and break stupid laws in your head, not in mine.

There is a right-way to play, when we are talking about African Patterns, becouse the playing means a communication,in this case the Arara's communication which is the root of all Djembe playing since, (202 B.C.),around the Greece Empire. That root arrived to Cuba with the slave-trade and I learned from my ancestors when I was growing up...Dr.? Zaragemca,(Gerry Zaragemca is a world's known authority in Afrocuban Percussion and Music).

Deejaeyzero, thanks for the personal email. I was unaware that one could do that. Hate is a strong word for those who offer a critique. Critique can be based on various levels of understanding and experience. "Hate" is not my source for the opinion offered. Dissapointment perhaps! I? will offer your advice to my Malian drum teacher when I display a lack of skill and he scoulds my attempts. "theres no right or wrong way to play or feel an instrument" will go down a treat with him! cheers
By: DeeJayZer0. on 28 Aug 08, 10:46:38
theres no right or wrong way to play, make,or feel an instrument. its ALL personal, and for his clothing, who cares! he can wear whatever he wants,as far as im concerned no instrument should be restricted to a culture, its all one culture, one? language, and one life, and thats music! dont hate and appreciate!
