Great tips. I agree that it is an opportune time to polish the drum. It is also a great time to check see if the lugs, leg? and rack tom support hardware is all tight, especially if it is a vintage or newly purchased used kit.

That is a cool bass drum sound. Personally I think the dampening is overkill. What I would do with those heads is remove the sheets? and turn the Pillow the other way around so it rests against the resonant head, as the EQ ring on the EMAD will take care of any unwanted overtones, but give the drum some tone behind the thud. Mind you maybe Jared's coming fromn a studio perspective where I am rather unexperienced.

@aaron9382 No not really, only if they lose the coat (when you're using coated heads) or if they have some dents in it (no matter what kind of head you are using if it is coated or clear or what ever) If you want to tune the heads, you just have to look if they are useable if the surface is ruffled, it would be? better if you're buy a new one. Sounds and looks better.

I definitely agree that people should be able to play single kick though, too many drummers that learn double right away but if you put them on a kit without it they can't do anythingxD Thank? you:D

@kaseyyydrums Because your a modern drummer. I was trained by my dad, who was trained by his dad, who was a jazz drummer in the 40's and 50's. They both learned on singles, they both perfected single pedal technique, and they didn't need double bass pedals. Now i understand if you use a double pedal out of choice, but at? least be able to show you dont DEPEND on them. Because your a modern drummer, you weren't biased like I or my dad or grandfather was. Besides, your only a kid. GREAT videos btw.

ei jared, i know this is so wrong to put this comment? into this page but here it goes, can you make a video about the difference of the sound of a drumheads? like differentiating coated with clear heads,dry sound and a wet sound, less attack and more attack,because, im reading a lot about drumheads,seeing this too much attack,too dry,i kinda understand it,BUT,when i read something like, "it has a very dry sound with less attack and a dark sound" im totally lost, (this is part 1,haha=)

Awesome lesson!!! but in my opinion the easiest way to get this rhythm under your skin, is to read the? notes and slowly play them in the tempo where is grooves and be patient! Eventually the groove starts to "groove" and you are there ;)

@qreste1 The groove uses groups of 3 (3-3-3-4) so the triplet analogy works when? breaking it down. He makes it clear the the pattern is in 16ths and explains in a way that is easy to digest. Just put a metronome on with the 16th subdivision playing and I can't see how you can go wrong. Great video dimsunk!

@qreste1 In the intro of the video,? I play the groove. Does it sound like a shuffle? I'm not playing it in triplets. It's in 16th notes. The explaining of the triplets is a first step to help working out the ghost notes and accents in the hands. The next step is moving it over to 16th notes. Like a kid riding a bike for the first time starts with training wheels then removes them eventually. You ask me to remove the video , but it helped alot of people. check the comments. @dimsunk You tell us to count as 'one and a.. two and a..'. It sounds more like Toto? - Rosanna this way. Listen to Rosanna and to this song and hear the difference. You should never count like this, then you'll never get it as tight as Garibaldi plays it. And it's not a triplet. A triplet is what you play in shuffles, which this is not. A swiss triplet is a triplet with a flam stroke, which has nothing to do with this either, Listen to yourself play at 7:29 and hear the triplets.

This video is not a good drum lesson. It only teaches you not to try and learn from YouTube videos. The beat does _not_ consist of triplets. Please watch David Garibaldi's videos and see the groove is composed of 16th notes in a regular feel. NOT a shuffle feel! So, as apposed to what this person is 'teaching' and playing, this groove does not contain triplets and is? NOT shuffle, at all. Do not even try to count as triplets.This is very important to understand. Please remove this video.

Before you can get? this lick down properly your left hand has to be very very comfortable playing ghost notes, its what i believe makes or breaks this lick, if your left hand is not up to speed it doesn't bind the lick together properly, practicing this brings your left hand on leaps and bounds and really improves your playing right across the board. hey van , once again love your lessons . i started to learn to read music and i bought the backbeat encyclopedia and i love it .....ive been drumming for 2 years and the book has forced me to place snare or kick in places im unfamiliar , you know break me out of my habitual beats ....and more importanly forced me to SLOW DOWN ...LOL . i really could use a good lesson on dotted notes? ...i hope you can help anyone out there that doesnt own this book , i highly reccomend it .....

About the robot-thing with no feeling and such (don't? know if anyone said it before). I also feel the grooves and all that stuff, but my drumteacher tells me to sit still with my body and my head and just letting it out in my hands. you're moving your head and all that stuff (which I also do) so I just wonder. Hope you got what I was trying to say there.

Its hard for a? student to qualify when a groove Sounds And Feels Good. It takes a lot of the student's brain power to muscle through complicated beats, let alone Listen to how the groove lays. (Evenness of hits, correct subdivisions, emitting the quarter note. etc) I found (once the student has the beat memorized), that setting up a 4 measure phrase with an easy fill at the end helps a lot. Have them repeat it 4 times. It lets their ears open up and makes 'em feel like they're playing a song.

You are right that slowing a beat down is more difficult. It really? forces you to think about the nuances. It also lets you work on way more complicated fills.

Hello, do you have any videos to separate my left hand and right hand? I taught myself how to play the drums, and I've been playing for years, but sometimes I can hear in head what I want to play, but I cant seem to play it on? the drums cause my left hand wont follow or really isnt fast enough. lol as well as making fills not on the down beat, but in different/odd spots in the fill. Uh, your definitions are wrong. You did not do any drum rolls. You did a drum fill using 16th notes in 4/4 time. 16th notes are not drum rolls. Moving to another drum every quarter count accross one measure is? not a drum roll. Drum rolls are rudiments (usually single stroke or double stroke) that can be executed on one or more drums and can vary greatly in duration, accents, dynamics, etc. depending on what is written or desired. Still---you demonstrate a worthwhile beginner exercise.

@antihaterz9999 nope, terribly sorry for that. Don't have the right equipment, the time, the space or the will to do that. One of? many of bad quality's I have. Another tip for learning: First learn, then don't think. If you think, you'll hesitate, you'll delay and then it all goes wrong. Just know it, don't think, try and make it feel natural.

@antihaterz9999 if you have the same rythm but with accented notes or ghost notes or something like that, then not. if it's a faster rythm, then yes. BTW If you don't adjust the? counting to your rythm, it will feel unnatural and just wrong. Trust me, when you master the standard beat, that comes along with it, autmaticly and instant.

I still a heel toe noob too because I've been doing it for a long time with my right foot but my left foot is stupid haha (so obviously I can't do long double bass heel toe)... @HastOsth Watch Jared Falk's explanation. You can do it with snowboards boots with your heel hitting the carpet? (way behind the board). You can do it with size 20 if you want, size has nothing to do with heel toe. Spikey drummer's video about pedal set up can help.

I'm an amateur lefty drummer, but I was just curious if that has anything to do with which foot I should NATURALLY be playing with? When I started, I? got a hang of the bass drum kicking on my own with my right foot, but I seem to catch on with this trick more easily with my left. Should I just do whatever I find more comfortable?

@jakelikestodrum Actually It's more or less technique. I've got size 12 feet (So my toes are right up against the chains on my Eliminators just to? get my heel on board). I've found a nice way around this is to take a lesson from Jared Falk -- in which your foot is halfway up the board, but instead of using your heel for the second stroke, you stomp your heel into the ground and flick your foot forward again. It actually works if you have big feet.

I find it super difficult to control the stick with my left hand if I use traditional. When I make a stroke the stick rebounds in a random direction and not only that - it seems that my wrist just can't follow? the motion of the stroke as if it's defective or something like that :/

I saw this couple of years ago, and now I really dominate that grip, and use it when necessary, because sometimes? for some grooves the match grip still a good choice. For me: Traditional grip = Riping off the rudiments

Should one learn this technique barefoot, or does it matter? The ballistic bass drum system really stresses learning it barefoot first then use wrestling shoes. Although as Jared showed us, footwear really doesn't matter. A good? laugh followed the snowboard boot. lol!!

Hey Jared, I have two technical question about your technique. The start/finish position is so that the beater remains on the head after the second hit so it will muffle the sound. Isn't this a problem ? Is it not gonna sound weird and different than the first hit ? Also, this start/finish position means that you have to keep your foot on the toe side. Wouldn't it be really tiring after a while because you would have to? constantly tense up your leg to keep it on the toes ? Many thanks

Can someone explain to me which part of the foot that actually? comes in contact to play the first beat? I can do the motion perfectly off the pedal, if I play the first note with my foot completely on the pedal and hit the first with my heel it sounds great and I can do them really fast. But if I am hitting my heel on the plate or off the back of the pedal I either get 1 note or nothing at all.

I love this technique, when I was playing my friend said it was impossible because his feet were longer, I told him what you said except I pointed out that all it is is just allowing the pedal a slight? bit of time to bounce up before tapping back down to go to starting position. When he understood that he could do it too. This video helped a lot. Thanks you Jared :)
