@mamanatare1 Everyone is different, but I tell this to all of my students: Do calf raises (weighted/unweighted) Speedwalk (while over exaggerating your foot movements) Do exercises that get ALOT of burn in your shins (heel down, flat foot, heel up, that? foot tap thing you do when impatient) Remember, whenever you do these exercises, do mostly endurance and work through a full range of motion. But your aim is muscle memory, so slow-medium speed, methodical, and over exaggerate moves

@Speckinblack and just 2 of them (me included) can do both techniques... but I admit I suck at slide but still can do it... i prefer heel toe... most of the drummers can do 1 tech but no the other so... I would recomend you that you should check both... and do the one is easier for you... also if you find the heel toe easier... and you want to do? slide... practice slide a lot... (i prefer heel toe because is easier to me to get a triplet)

i think these videos are great, not only as a beginner/intermediate lessons or guide, but also for us advanced guys. i have been playing for? 15 years, play in 2 metal bands, and you knwo that thing that happens sometimes, you have an idea for a beat to put in a certain weird timed part of a song, but nothing seems to just work the way you want? these videos always seem to if not make it click, but to just help with a refresh of the basics and something just seems ot work. thanks... keep them up!

good teacher...as i am still learning you break things down just as a great teacher does and i find them relatively hard at? first but practising all the time is borin and hard at first but it really does work...practice practice n practice...it all comes clear in the end and now ive improved with different grooves and great fills...thanks again SPIKEY...TOP 5 STAR TEACHER...

He is so humble and honest and positive. I wish more drummers were like him. Fantastic lessons and AWSOME tips. He makes it very clear in his comments to "practice, practice" and you will get it. He is so good and I love the way he does not try to say it is all about "speed". I think alot of young drummers? just think 200bpm 220bpm 240bpm and they miss out on the fact that it is a musical instument and not a jackhammer. Groove baby ! Ya gotta have Groove!

Great tips. I agree that it is an opportune time to? polish the drum. It is also a great time to check see if the lugs, leg and rack tom support hardware is all tight, especially if it is a vintage or newly purchased used kit.

That is a cool bass drum sound. Personally I think the dampening is overkill. What I would do with those heads is remove the sheets and turn the Pillow the other way around so it rests against the resonant head, as the EQ ring on the EMAD? will take care of any unwanted overtones, but give the drum some tone behind the thud. Mind you maybe Jared's coming fromn a studio perspective where I am rather unexperienced.

@aaron9382 No not really, only if they lose the coat (when you're using coated heads) or if they have some? dents in it (no matter what kind of head you are using if it is coated or clear or what ever) If you want to tune the heads, you just have to look if they are useable if the surface is ruffled, it would be better if you're buy a new one. Sounds and looks better.

And also, your second measure at 8:22 is a 16th note short of being of full bar at 4/4 time cause you have a 2 qtrs at 1 which takes us to 1 and, then a 16th at 2 and a dotted 8th which takes us to 2 e and ah, then a qtr note at 3 which takes us to 3 and, then a 16th and an 8th note at 4 which only takes us to 4 e and, then it stops. No rests?

@ScoopDeville04 At 8:22 you Pointed to a 16th note but it doesn't have a second flag on it. The 8th note that is tied to the same? 16th note has an extra flag on it thus making it a 16th note, right? At 1:50, you said that an extra flag on an 8th note makes it a 16th note. So this is confusing, you called a note a 16th when it doesn't have the second flag. Why? Is it because it's between two 8th notes so that tells us it's a 16th so there's no need for a second flag on it? Can you clear it up?

There are other ways of counting 16s but this is the most common. (one? eee and ah) 1 E & A 2 E & A 3 E & A 4 E & A. Hope that helps.

I watch a lot of your videos (thank you, by the way,? for all your work), and strangely I had not come across this one until today. Watching you do the original beat and then spice it up a bit, I realized it sounded VERY familiar... then it hit me. This beat and it's "spiced up" versions are EXACTLY what Trent Rezner uses for the song Only. Not only that, but I very quickly learned the groove to Only via this video. So, thanks for that!

@Katakomves No you just grab your drum set, and completely switch it up, the Hi-Hat goes to the right instead of the left, the snare on the right, instead of the left, and your floor tom to the left instead of the right. Get your left foot on the bass pedal.? However, you keep your right hand on the Hi-Hat, and left on the snare. So instead of the usual, which is your arms being crossed, your arms don't cross, and you should be able to to see your Hi-Hat pedal.

@Katakomves Same here, just set your drumset up as if you were left handed (left hand on the Hi-Hat, right hand on? the snare) but instead, play open handed (right hand on the hi-hat, left hand on the snare, as usual). This will take some getting used to, but it can work out great. Also, your "curse" can greatly help you when finally playing double bass drum. Another thing you could do is take about 15 minutes a day to train your right foot. This also will help with Double bass later.

Hey Tim,very helpful drum lessons ! Just wondering why you don't? use an "up and down" movement of the right arm. That's the technique I learned to accentuate the 2 and 4's. Basically means you slightly hit the ride while lifting your arm up on the 1 and 3's then fully hitting when doing the 2 and 4's when your arm is going down. I think this really helps to put the accents but also "monitors" your placement on the pattern. Keep up the good work

Played many years. I have had technique trouble? with how to do the skip note. (ie. the third not of the triplet.) Iv'e experimente for a year. How do you make this happen without dragging the following quarter note off meator??? @godzuki444 20X14's are cool, but there is nothing like an 18! I have been playing 18's now for about 20 years and will never go back. I have toured with Rock and jazz bands with them and have never? had a problem. For me it is a feel thing and 18's feel great to me. 20's are cool too, but seem too big for small group jazz to me. I think it is just a matter of personal preference. Hope this rambling helps!

Pete Riley is a great drum teacher and makes good vids. I think the comment about left handedness is neither leftist nor hating - it is just a bit weird watching a left handed player play something and sometimes it is hard to follow. There are? of course left handed drummers after instruction, for who it must be a positive. It is easy enough to flip a picture - I wonder if it is practical to include an image reversal feature on the video?

Whenever I hear other drummers playing Stewart's parts, no matter how good they are, none of them come close to copying his feel! I can tell the guy in this video is great... better than I'll ever be... but when I hear him? play the chorus to Roxanne, it just doesn't have the same drive than when Stewart plays it. I'm surprised not to hear more professional drummers talk about Stewart's APPROACH to playing, instead of just his parts. Anyone agree?

It's actually not a? reggae influence you are hearing in Copelands drumming... It's a jewish ethnic influence. If I didn't hear him say it himself in an interview, I wouldn't believe it either tho. He couldn't even name a single reggae drummer that he liked... He talked about Ginger Baker and the rock greats, and then the Jewish music he grew up with. Look it up! It'll blow your mind

If you enjoy Mike's slick videos, his awesome production and quality facility then you should understand that the more money in his pocket means the better quality lessons for us. Not to mention, this video is over 1.5 years old. Mike sure seems like he hasn't changed much to me. I get what you're saying, but endorsements for guys like him are a good thing. Heck, if they came out? with a MJ body wash, I'd buy it to support the dude.

that's when you hit and push? your brush onto the rim (with the stick part of the brush, not the brush itself) and then just let the brush swing around against the drumhead. sounds cool huh?
