Pitching the reso to an "A" provides good starting point for both batter and snare-wire response. Initially, pitching both heads to an "A" , than raising the pitch of the snare batter will offer many different sound? qualities to consider. It's important that you understand that SOUND IS SUBJECTIVE... if it sounds good to YOU... it's a good sound.

Well, I'd never answer Bob back, but to me it sounds like the C Sharp? is not higher than the A. It's lower than the A. But this is also quiet Ok, because to me a snare sounds better when the batter is lower than the reso. Just like the toms.

I suggest trying the Evans combo....Powercenter-RD with the hazy 300 reso head. This? combo offers a wide range of tunings and very good durability. It's a classic combination.

I'm using? clear single ply drum head with power dot on my piccolo snare. what would you recommend for the "fat high" sound for a rimshot player with rock drumming approach? i been using coated 2-plies drum heads but it keeps de-tuning in the middle of the song. prob because the drum itself is "low" so air keeps hitting the top head very hard. the clear drumhead gives me more good tuning and rimshot "crack" but it doesn't sound too "fat"

@sunnylee84 The "A" pitch is a middle road for the snare-reso head. Generally, tuning below the "A" pitch will suggest less definition in overall snare sound. On the other hand, tension above? will encourage snare buzz. Bottom line... SOUND & FEEL is subjective. I suggest you tune it to the "A" and experiment with a wide variety of pitches from the batter. All that matters is..."If it sounds good to YOU... it's a good sound".

thanks for vid, Bob! it gave a different direction and picture. for some reason I've been using tuning for such a long time where I tuned snare side head? pretty light and tighten batter head the regular way. what do you think about this? i know it sounds crazy but it gives me lot more "snares" for some reason. anyway, what would you recommend?

@judaxsify The snare wires control the balance between the drums sound (tom tom) to the amount of snare sound. The more snare wires, and width creates the overall of the drum. No better or worse...? personal choice. For instance I like 16-20 wire snare formats...again personal choice... you need to experiment, you'll know instantly what works best for you. Good luck Jud!

Hey bob, it's EZ again xD, ive been listening to alot of Rush recently, and I am in love with Neil's snare sound on the Caress of Steel album. I have 2 snare drums, one a ludwig mahogany 6x14, and the other a tama rockstar steel 5.5x14 (im pretty sure that's the size) and i was wondering how I could achieve that sound with one of the snares and? if i needed to use my 42 strand or my 12 strand. It's hard for me to determine what i need to do to get that sound so that's why im asking you :D

@bumi84 I have a? black panther too (epic drum) and I find it best for metal at an A-sharp on the Rez-head and a C-Sharp on the batter head. If you want more of a clear tone then that, try messing with tighter snare wires or new heads. -Daniel

Thanks for the? video. I find it helpful in revising my stick grip as I'm just starting to pick up percussion again after almost half a year's break. Bad grip can cause some wrist pains and injuries. Remember stretching too!

@drinkfromthefurrycup ....you may be holding the sticks too tight, or it could be sweat...keeping your hands and fingers dry helps stop blisters......if you can eliminate those two things, then look at stick size. Make sure you? use sticks that are comfortable for you, and the size of your hands, in terms of thickness of the stick not length. You can also try using sticks that have no laquer on them, or scrape it off, laquer tends to make sticks slippery, forcing you to hold on tighter.

@heebeeGBmusic This is actually very easy to pick up. gary chaffees "technique patterns" book, the 16th note and triplet "basic" hand/foot combinations . there's? around 36 total in the book itself iirc. you can build your own variations of course, that is the point of mastering them. practice them with quarters on left foot step hi-hat and a metronome. get a good instructor if none of what I said makes sense! ;)

the problem is there's just singel stroke rolls being used there's like over 50 diffrerent rudiments that are used out there? it's kinda boring just listening to single stroke that's why it's better to learn how to read drum notation because you can learn so much other interesting rudiments to use in solos

You're not alone!! Concentrate, focus exclusively on your "EARS". Pick up a simple inexpensive instrument that produces pitches. I suggest the "Hohner Melodica". It has a piano-like keyboard that you blow into like a trumpet. I use it all the time when I feel the need to indentify pitches. Great learning tool for well? under 100 dollars. Every drummer should have a Melodica. Please let me know how you make out.

I'll? be replacing stock heads soon, I guess, so I'll use the opportunity to check the shells for roundness and bearing edges for flatness. And what I ended up doing in this case is use the TW to bring the head up to some "numerical" tension, and then retune it by ear :) Because I'd been playing guitar for so long, I guess I like to have a frame of reference.

@Lesstra It's important to remember that Tension Watches, Drum Dials, etc. are nothing more than gimmicks. Having equal tension at every lug doesn't mean much. Like Bob said, your drum may be slightly out of round, but every drum/head will have slight imperfections that cause this problem. If the lugs SOUND similar, then the drum is in tune. If they have the same tension, then they have the same tension.? Nothing more.

@Lesstra If you followed the tuning techniques on my channel but continue to struggle with tuning, you might have some issues with the drum itself. Best to check the? shell for "roundness" (concentricity), also check the counter hoops. Reassemble the drum and try tunin g the head from several different positions... i.e 12:00 > 3:00> 6:oo and 8:00 o clock. Let me know if this helps Bob

Hi Bob, I'm a guitarist, but recently, (because I love playing drums) I bought some cheap kit, force 507 I think. I also have Tama's Tension Watch. I? tried tuning it by ear and with TW. The kit still has stock heads. I experimented with different tensions from lower to higher, and always the same thing was happening: when tuned with TW with equal tension on each lug, the pitches were different on each lug, and otherwise, by ear, close pitches - different tension. Any experiences in this area?

There is no reason to change the hoop each time unless? it is bent/out of round or rusted. doing that will do nothing unless you would to go for a different type of hoop for a different sound such as die cast, wood hoops, pearl super hoops. Hey Bob. love your vids. so many great tips. one thing is my toms. i have them tuned to the lowest posisble pitch. the overtones of the ring of the drum i eliminate with the evans "e-rings" . however. i lose almost all the rebound of the skins. and it becomes really hard to move around the kit with speed and efficiency. i tend? to have to result in full arm "beating" rather.. any tips? i dont mind tuning tighter. just dont like overtones ringing out. like a dead sound for heavy metal.

@Freedome23 try rotating the batter head 25 degrees ( 12:00>3:00) and retune. This will establish the best fit between the bearing edge of the drum to? the head. If overtones persist try the Evans Mini-EMAD mufflers. They are descrete and totally adjustable.? Another option is to pick some Velco round dots (hardware store) and place them onto the head surface close to the edges. Cna't EXPERIMENT enough. The 2 (3) cymbals that were with it were: Pearl ZBT; 16"/33cm Crash/Ride, & 13"/33cm HiHats. The shell wrap barely overlaps a little. I'm not sure if? the solid pure white wrap (without ANY pattern) was limited to certain years or if they argh made overlapping (most likely were in-case stretching).

If I had more than a five piece kit (2up, 1down), I would use the E-rings on some toms that were off to the left, just barely with in my reach. They don't really cut the tone @ all, just SUSTAIN.
