This is a great lesson. I am a big Keith Carlock fan and he discusses finger technique from a traditional grip standpoint. The principal is the same. Jared teaches this technique just as Keith Carlock does. The difference is that Jared stresses the point that patience is required. He is realistic about how long it takes to get this technique. Keith? doesn't (I don't think) talk about how long it took (or it takes) to get this to the point he has. Still, two great teachers and one great technique.

@Reversed1ife ur ignorance is showing. playing with the fingers allows you to play faster and for longer with less energy. the faster u want to swing a pendulum, the smaller the movements have to be. hence, playing with ur fingers as a technique vs playing? with ur wrists or elbow is desirable if u want to play faster and more efficiently. id say thats a pretty normal desire to have as a musician. but if getting tendonitis is normal for u then knock yourself out. nice video mr. Falk ; )

this ones for the ladies. ha. finger technique... but seriously, the only thing id interject into this very helpful lesson is if u can isolate each finger to build up strength and? stamina. this will also help with correcting wandering-stick-syndrome as ur grip has to be pretty loose to allow the stick to fully rebound. working each finger individually will work on the micro movements u need to do to keep the stick from spinning or sliding up or down tightening ones grip will slow u down

@SuperDRUMZONE I've been using it for about 1 year and a half, and it gets better and better, I almost? couldn't do it at first with my left hand, but now my left hand is much more solid than my right hand with the finger technique. I can pretty much go to 250-260 bpm(16th notes both hands combined)

Upon heaing the first 'lick'--I knew I was in for a? treat. Though I have not played rock in a strong way, My main drumming was funk some years ago. I will admit that your 'relaxed' (or so it appeared) approach does aid in giving others that strive for 'pacing and spacing' to see that one need not be a Neil Peart to have Tom Sawyer 'flow' -- even with 'licks' that would throw the 'flow' of the song for some. Excellent job!! As others have said --- nailed!!

Hi again Michelle I need to clarify my last post. Obviously, triplets are routinely played with one end of the tipper. What I mean is where the stick bounces and produces a third beat, caused by stick-bounce, between the up and down stroke, and/or between the down and the up. ? I am getting this accidentally, and what I'm asking is if, as I would assume, players take control of this effect and use it .

Hi Michelle Great videos! I wondered if you had come across this: My arms are twisted inwards. This makes some instruments very difficult. However, with a bodhran, all I do is hold the drum at a different angle. While trying to find a comfortable angle, I noticed that slight errors sometimes produce triplets with just one end of the tipper as it bounces. I assume? that other players have similar deformities. Am I right to assume that and that one-end triplets are used anyway? Paul

You think you know how to hold the tipper. I mean, how hard can it be? Just hold it like a pencil and hammer away. Well, it was tougher than I thought. I wasn't able to do triplets/rolls without them sounding forced, until I got really comfortable holding the? tipper. So, it took me a while to learn -- but your vids really helped me to keep at it. taught myself with a 'straight wrist', without realising it, and always wondered why my? wrist looked so stiff compared to most other players on youtube, and seemed to lack fluency. Now I've watched this, i understand why, and am re-learning the instrument with the 'curved wrist'. It feels odd still, but i think i have a better grip on the tipper, and it's more aesthetically pleasing.....but I'm finding triplets very hard now, whereas before i found them easy!! Ah well....practice, practice!

Hi, great lessons, thanks. I'd like to have a teacher like you, here in france. I have one question: the top end of my tipper often bounce again the skin and it makes a double top end? stroke. Nice sound but i don't master it and it's hard to avoid when the tempo raises. Do you have an advice for me? Is it my grip on the tipper that is bad? Or a bad wrist movement? Hi Hutch. Funnily enough I recorded a video on holding the tipper this week, but haven't had time to post it yet. Will make a point of putting it up asap. The thumb scraping becomes more obvioius when we're trying to get closer to the skin - especially for triplets. I keep my nails quite short, but if my thumb nail gets even a bit of length? to it I find even I can get a nail scrape. Amazing how just a small amount of nail growth can be the culprit sometimes.

Trying out your? tipper holding style as i play straight wrist and find the shock on my thumb painful I notice you choke up pretty high with tipper and i'm trying to adjust to that I find my thumb is further forward and scrapes the head sometimes have you run across this with other students? Your videos are so good and I am trying so hard, although I do find it a little? frustrating at times. I have been practicing for about now 2 weeks now, and I am improving. I am sure my problem has to do with how I am holding my tipper. I would love it, if you could start out slow, but continue for a few minutes rather than stopping. Explaining? what you're doing around the kit gives us a better understanding of how to play. No offence to Roganc, but we all learn differently and free-flowing doesn't really make you a better musician. I have had the Ultra Adjust in both the stand and non-stand versions (as the cable on the stand version broke Musician Friends honored the warranty by sending me the the cheaper non-stand unit. Which is better because I can move it around easier). As I am 6'7" and like? the toms close and pedals out I need something like this. Problem is the action is not the best. I think that is due to the cable contortion? Given this I may try the Speedy Hat or just a remote hi-hat.

At 1:52 is the only brief clip that shows the most important? part of the drumming. Why couldn't the cameras not have caught that part. It wasn't common practice for the camera crew to work out such details to the letter in those days.

Part of the turkish technique that makes it so different is that you lead with the first finger on your left hand. Even if you lead with your ring finger it still won't necessarily be egyptian, it just sure as heck won't be turkish. It's almost like you are playing Turkish style with? Egyptian fingering. But still bravo for posting such well made videos!

When you know the darbuka you know it is spread on a wide region with a lot of names and a lot of playing styles and techniques You're like a kelly style bodhran player who says a top style player can't play.
