@3daypriest Thanks! Did you see? They just blocked my Genesis' 'Duke's End'. I really can't stand these record companies. All we're doing is giving them free exposure. We're not making a penny off of their music. Why is it that cover bands can go out into the bars every night and are allowed to earn a living playing all copyrighted material, but we're not allowed to use it for pure entertainment/educational purposes? Nobody's gonna pirate? these songs with my drums on top of it all.

@ScalerWave Thanks! Yeah, I've got each mic doing double or triple duty. I really need a 24-channel DIGITAL board. I'm currently using? a 16-channel analog, with only an 8-channel interface to work with Cubase. So my sound is kind of hamstrung. When I get a couple of thousand to blow, I'll upgrade! As for this song, it's not my favorite KC album, but just did this as a collaboration, (which, I'm told, should be posted very soon). I'm currently working on material from the 'Discipline' album.

I do the same: listen the same work in my hifi by it,s speaker system, then by headphones (different ones!), then in the CD player in my wife's car (she is not always happy:), then in my car by tape. Each gives a bit? different tone, but You know well. Maybe we are musically more sensitive drummers:) Anyway thank for the advice tuning snare. I do the same as You - tight up the upper head to max and and let a bit looser the skin under, but the result is far from You:)

Hehey! What a good choice Dave! Excellent job! My fave Crimson album - and Starless is a "forevergreen"! This camera aspect is very good too! And very well changed the? cymbals to the music. If only I enjoyed "Toccata" (ELP) in Your interpretation! I bet that would be even better than Palmer,s one!

After I finished my part here, he informed me that you WERE still in, and that he didn't need my parts after all. So I turned it into this cover instead.? @ttomsdw Thanks, Tom. Yeah, I was just going with mics through a board originally, but wanted a more 'produced' sound. Unfortunately on this video, though it was supposed to be a test of Cubase, I didn't have it set up right. All of the? channels were defaulted to channel one (from the factory), so all I got was everything through the right overhead, (I think). Notice how the left side of the set is very low, especially by the rotos. Got it working right now, though.

@ScalerWave Thanks! I was using an M-Audio module with Cubase 2.0 on 8 channels. For the first time. Unfortunately, being an acoustic drummer and basically a moron with technology,? I never changed the factory pre-sets from all channels being on one. So I recorded the solos basically using one mic! That's why the left side of the kit is so low in the mix. I'm testing it again, (with all channels working this time), on a re-do of my ELP 'Tank' solo. (Don't like the version I posted).

@3daypriest Good ear. I think Phil did those parts on small rototoms. I had to use Octabans, and yes, they were tuned much higher. Normally, when I do a cover, I try to retune my drums somewhat to match the original. But retuning the Octabans really decreased the cutting sound they make, and? I wanted them to come through loudly and clearly.

I don't fully agree about the small toms sounding just like Phil's though. I've listened to this song hundreds of times and the first few beats have a bit too high of a pitch to them.

Very nicely done!! A strange & wonderful drum passage. Your high hat? is far from your snare. Do you ever get pains in your oblique muscles on your left side from leaning right to reach it? I ask because I went through it. I see you use open hand method as well as cross over with your hats - that's cool! You don't see that every day. Thanks for posting it, I love Bozzio and glad to see that you do as well. I'm sure Terry would be honored by your performance. Your mix sounds good too.

@ttomsdw Thanks, Tom. Personally, I liked Bruford more than Bozzio in this band. Bruford is so syncopated and offbeat, he fit the band better, imo. The first album was so unique. Bozzio is good too, but I felt he changed the flavor of the band a bit more towards rock. And after Holdsworth left, it became more of a power trio than the progressive band it started out as. Same thing with Yes, after Bruford left and Alan White took over. A? whole different interpretation. But I still love them all!

@Tama12pc Thanks! I'm not real happy about the intro. I liked including the cowbell beat with my foot, but the rest of it does not have quite the right feel as Bozzio's solo. (It works well enough in the middle bridge, though.) I basically ran out of time and posted what I had. Would liked to have done a few more takes and nailed it down better.? The fills in the song are what Bozzio plays, but the intro still annoys me a bit. Oh well. Thanks again for watching and your generous comments!

@Masterfilm15 Thanks. Yeah, it is a smooth set to play. I'm going to reverse it and set it up righty, and practice on it that way for awhile. It sucks playing lefty, when everybody else is playing righty. When people ask you to sit in, you don't want to mess up the set-up by reversing it. Nor do you feel like playing? disadvantaged by playing 'backwards'! Playing both ways equally well would be advantageous for me.

@17drums I digest about 20 music videos a night, not to mention, I have a? good ear for quality recordings. I love complex classic rock (and pretty much all types of music for that matter). Your skills surpass those of other drummers. Keep in mind that I grew up in a family full of musicians. -- I was tripping over guitar cables since I was 5. My father and brothers all played their instruments well and classic rock music often shook the floor of our house. When I say it's good.. It's good.

@GBWagner1 Thanks George! Yeah, the electronic drums can be tricky some times. That section you noted, (0:50-1:05) is a perfect example. The rim trigger on that pad on the far right was a wood block. But I had alot of trouble getting it to trigger. Almost everytime I hit it, it sounded like the tom,? which kind of ruined the section. It was supposed to be an interplay between woodblocks and cowbells, and NO toms. It's also alot tougher to get a decent rim shot exactly when and how you want it.

(Only within us: I appreciate Carl Palmer - mostly His music taste, eg. the choice of Prokofiev's Enemy Goddes dance with the Evil Spirits /one of my faves/- but He is far not so creative as You.) Thanks! Yeah, that's what I love about the TD-12's. The smaller pads (not only save room) but DO force precision. That was the main reason for choosing them over the TD-20. I love singles too. I'm not real sure of the technique I'm using other than trying to play fast. In my first training video, I show the exercises I used in my development. Maybe that'll help give a clue? I'm self-taught so not really informed as to specific? techniques. Sorry. And thanks again!

Love this! I used to have a set of TD 12's. I found they made me really centre up on my strokes because the pads were small. Thanks for posting....I am a creature of the single stroke roll.....could you slow down or explain what rudiments are involved in the rolls in this video. I noticed you use it in other videos and it really displays a level of tempo I cannot reach with the single...I just want to know the technique if at all? possible. THANKS! Awesome work!

@GBWagner1 Funny you liked the 17 set best. I do too. But that's probably because I've been playing it for far longer than the other two sets. The really tough part of doing this solo was all the footwork. One set is in the basement. One set on the ground floor, and one set upstairs. I'd record one section, then break down the recording equipment and set it up on the next floor. And after quickly reviewing what I had just played, try to respond to it on the new set,? etc. Lost 10 lbs doing it!

Thanks. That was me playing? all 3 sets. I had to do a part on the Fibes set, then break the camera down, move it down a flight of stairs, set it all up again with video and audio sound checks, and try to respond on the Roland set to what I remembered playing previously on the Fibes. Then down to the cellar for the Pearl set response to the Rolands, etc. Then back upstairs to the Fibes for another round, and so forth. Quite exhausting. Fours all around would have been easier. I agree.

Thanks! The Roland module is a TD-12. I was going to get the TD-20, but decided I didn't need all those extra channels. I was able to add a couple of extra drum pads and a cymbal to the TD-12, so that's enough for me. And the smaller pads (6")take? up less room, plus force you play more precisely!

Joe, I forgot to address your 1st question about the Fibes upper toms, sorry. Those are actually Ludwig Vistalites, that? I converted into Fibes with hardware, and some antique copper sheeting that Fibes sent me (before they went out of business). They do cut through, but the sustain I think is mostly from the mix.

Yeah, I was trying something new. I have two different-sized base drums because I like the musical variations that are possible with the two tones. But I wanted to see how a single base sounded with? the double beater instead. Great pedal. (Expensive, though!) Thanks for watching.

Thanks, Gunner! I too love having lots of drums. But to keep up my speed, I moved them all in as? tightly as possible to reduce the distances and gaps. Definitely makes crossovers and such, much easier! It's been 25 years since you were playing comfortably on your old set-up, right? Why not try a new set-up?

Nice timing and crossovers. I wish I culd do crossovers better, but I designed my drums for the BIG 80s look and sound.....and I kinda got used to it now. But of course, it? does prohibit doing some things...but then again, I do a lot of stuff that is kinda difficult with drums and cymbals mounted so far away from me. Oh well, I'm rambling....Good Job Dave!!!

Thanks! Unfortunately, after blowing out my good headphones, this was the only volume level on the other phones, where I could really? hear the metronome mix as loud as the drum mix. (That's also why I had to wear the tie--to press the phones tighter against my head just to hear it better.)

@kennywowie Thank you! I use all Paiste cymbals, (mostly 2002? series). Those round black markings are just foam muting dots I put on to speed the decay of the crashes and prevent build-up on the ride, (for recording and practicing--they keep the neighbors at bay!) I've recently removed them though, to get the full cymbal sounds.
