How to Read Guitar Music Tablatures: A Guide to Improve your Guitar Playing

Guitar music has been around for a long time now and is still very popular. A guitar is a stringed and fretted instrument where you can play a song by strumming or plucking the strings of the guitar. You make a note by using the fret board or finger board.

It is a fact that people loves listening to music. And, every kind of people loves to hear it for entertainment purposes or for relaxing. From children to teenagers to old people, music is one of the best ways to unwind after a hard day at school or work.
However, sometimes listening to music is just isn’t enough for you to entertain yourself. You may want to play your favorite song by yourself by using a guitar. But, what if you don’t have the slightest idea on how to play the guitar? What if you don’t know how to strum or even play a single note in a guitar?

For some people, it can be very difficult for them to play the guitar. But, it can relatively be easy if you know how to read guitar music sheets or tablatures. Here, you can easily play your favorite song by just following what is illustrated in the tablatures.

You can even save a lot of money by not hiring a guitar instructor. This is because using guitar sheet music is a simple and easy way to learn how to play your favorite song. All you need is to know how to read it and how to listen to music.

Reading guitar tablature is very easy. It is a more informal approach to learn how to play the guitar and can serve as your guide to improve your guitar playing. With guitar tablatures, you can now learn how to play the guitar by yourself.

Firstly, a tab is an illustration of six lines representing each string of a guitar, the first string being on top and the sixth string on the bottom. You will also notice that there are numbers in the middle of the string. What this means is that you have to play the specific fret on the specific string.

The numbers represent the fret. So, for example, if you see a number six on the fifth string (A string) this means that you have to pluck the fifth string with your finger on the sixth fret of the guitar. When you see that the numbers are placed on a vertical line, this means that you have to strum. For example, if you see the numbers two on the first string, 3 on the second string, 2 on the third string, and 0 on the other strings in a straight vertical line, this will mean that you have to strum the D chord.

This is how simple it is to read guitar tablatures. By simple placing numbers on each line, you will know where your finger will go on every fret.

You will also see letters in a guitar tablature. For example, you will see the letter “h” frequently. This simply means hammer on. For example, if you see this on a specific fret (6h8) what this means is that you will first pluck it on the sixth fret and quickly tap and let go of the same string on the eight fret with your other finger.

Other letters you will see are “b” for bending the string, “v” for vibrating the string, “s” or “/” “\”for sliding your finger to another fret.

The biggest disadvantage of guitar tablatures is the rhythmic notation. There is simply isn’t any rhythmic notation in a guitar tablature. So, what you should do is listen to the song, while you read the guitar tablatures and play it in your guitar.

This is a great way to learn how to play your favorite song without having formal music education. It is also one of the best ways to share your version on how to play a particular song.
